ABOUT

Matti Heininen’s constant strive for excellence is exemplified in his orchestral work, towards the extraordinary adventures of Baron Munchausen for FRSO and Gustavo Gimeno, a score so detailed and rich that printing it required special arrangements. As Munchausen’s tales, Heininen’s music keeps pushing the boundaries of reality, exploding towards absurdity. Yet, the music is controlled through a deep understanding of its underlying forces.

In his music Heininen continuously challenges his own intuition. In 2017 his first opera Rakkauden ateria, initiated by Jorma Hynninen, was hailed by the press as ”challenging for audience and performers alike…”. The same year Spettrale, premiered by Trio SurPlus at the Akademie Schloss Solitude was described as ”exceptional show of talent” by Der Neue Merker. Since then it has received numerous performances in Germany, latest by Ensemble KNM Berlin.

Winner of the Freja Prize 2022 and finalist in the Mauricio Kagel Competition 2016, Heininen is constantly working on commissions for various ensembles and venues. Tampere Biennale 2024 saw two world premieres, one by Defunensemble. As of this day, he lists nearly 50 compositions. He continues in the path laid out in his work Spettrale: Freedom and fun are a consequence of control. Without discipline, we remain mere spectres of our potential selves.
